To choose the right course, always consider your field of interest. The reason is if you would choose a course of your interest, you will work with great interest and would like to put your efforts. On the other hand, if you would go for an option, opposite to your field of interest, you will most likely try to flee from your duties.
This reality applies not only at the entrance level of a university but also when you are going to specialize in a specific discipline. If you are a high school graduate and want to go for one of the dental courses, then consider multiple aspects. First of all, see what your budget is. If you can afford a degree then go ahead. Keep in mind that after graduation, you would become a dentist but still you would need to do specialization in one of the major fields. At this stage, you should not ignore your aptitude. There are multiple fields like Dental Public Health, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Periodontology, Pediatric Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Before choosing one of the major fields, one should have idea about its content. For example, in Dental Public Health is about social health policies and epidemiology related to dentistry. Endodontics is about Root canal therapy and diseases of dental pulp.
For radiologic interpretation of oral and maxillofacial diseases, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is studied. Similarly, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is associated with extractions, implants and surgery. If you opt for Orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics, you would study that how to straight the teeth and modify and midface. One of the dental courses of Pediatric Dentistry that is associated with children. For dentures, implant restorations and bridges, Prosthodontics is studied. These specializations are acquired about a basic degree course.
If you want to choose a non-degree course, then consider your interests in this case too. One can choose from lab technician and dental hygiene courses. These dental courses can be studied in an institute. One acquires a certificate after completion of these courses. In this way, one gets a little job and become independent. These courses are a way to become an earning-hand a little earlier than a regular doctor. But it is a fact that the standard of knowledge of these courses is less than a degree program. So, whether, you are going to get a degree or a short course in dentistry, never ignore your field of interest. The right choice of course can lead you to a successful life.
