Thanks to the flooring experts at Floorcoat NZ, timber floor sanding is no longer a big mystery. So what exactly is timber floor sanding? Generally speaking, floors are first sanded with special sanding machines and finished off with a protective layer ...
... of oil or polyurethane. Here are some of the steps that professional flooring experts take when conducting timber floor sanding.

1.First Step
The first step is also hailed as the most important step. Flooring professionals will first prep the floor. All protruding nails are removed or punched down. The same is done to staples, adhesives and other bits and pieces that may play a role in damaging either the floors, sanding machine, or overall new look of the floors.

2.Second Step
Once the floor has been meticulously prepared, old coatings are then removed. Sanding will then be done with a coarse-grit sandpaper. This is done with a special sanding machine typical within the industry. Hard to reach corners are usually sanded by hand or with an edger. Height differences between the wooden floor boards are also evened out, leaving the floors completely smooth and flat. Should the filling of holes from previous damage or regular wear and tear be required, this is when they are carried out. The entire process is then repeated with a finer sand paper.

3.Third Stage
The final stage comprises of the coating. Once the floor has been smoothly sanded down, it will be coated with layers of specific products. These products comprise of polyurethane, oils, stain, and other sealants. They are known to give wooden floors a polished finished and will protect the floors from future damage. Interestingly, three to four layers of coating are required to produce the best results. This tedious processes requires disking and cleaning between each stage, making the third step the longest of the lot.

Although maintenance of wooden floors that have undergone timber floor sanding is required, the cost is not as high as expected and only needs to be done every two to five years. To someone who knows nothing about timber floor sanding, it may seem like a taxing, expensive and time consuming affair. However, homeowners who have opted for timber floor sanding have attested to the fact that it is a crucial process in ensuring that one’s floors look and feel great.
