Implement Lync Network Readiness Assessment Methodology
Identify methodology phases: order phases, identify entry and exit standards, Discovery, Modeling, Simulation, and Recommendation.
Define duration and scope of methodology phases: geographical profile of the customer, how many customers sites are tested, internal customers processes and requirements.
Identify deliverables: includes bandwidth calculator, final presentation, and final report.
Prepare for traffic simulation: how to access technical requirements of synthetic transaction tools, determine the timing of simulations, and gather blockers for simulation.
Analyze the Network Environment
Review WAN topology: includes MPLS, VPN,MPLS providers, point-to-point wireless, and signaling vs. media traffic.
Review Wi-Fi infrastructure: access point roaming, controller placement, and channel overlap.
Review QoS approaches: traffic policing and traffic shaping impact on RTC, DSCP, and separate/converged networks.
Analyze media flow scenarios: conference, peer-to-peer, PSTN, and capture traces.
Analyze the network for optimal performance: max and average jitter, peak consecutive and average packet loss and one way network delay.
Monitor and manage networks: includes utilization, managing policy enforcement, monitoring tools and evaluating network availability.
Perform Usage Modeling.
Model RTC traffic media flows: includes peer-to peer, conferencing, and PSTN.
Model Lync traffic per location: predict service needs and growth, calibrate usage models based on customer usage and business requirements.
Calculate traffic volume by using the Lync bandwidth calculator: peer-to-peer, conferencing, branch traffic, central site traffic, and remote user traffic.
Analyze how predicted traffic impacts a network: how to adjust business requirements, network components and limit traffic volume or change solution design.
Analyze Customer Data and Measurements
Examine policies collected from the discovery phase: it has Service Level Agreementson network infrastructure, analyzing the impact of security policies.
Examine data network usage: average and peak usage, average drop, and peak packet loss.
Plan simulation traffic: design synthetic transaction endpoint placement/location, transaction path and volume per path.
Examine results from traffic simulation: interpret baseline network characteristics.
Formulate recommendations: recommend network reconfigurations and modifications for QoS approach.
