My Super Hero

Yahoo! asked readers and contributors to write short personal stories on caring for an autistic child in honor of National Autism Awareness Month. Here is one perspective.

I noticed my son's developmental delays at the age of three. He wasn't speaking and conducted actions in a repetitive manner. I took him to the pediatrician; she made several referrals and ordered examinations. After conducting various tests, the results proved my son to be autistic. I became mission oriented to get him the best treatment and education he could get. There have been many days of struggle due to proper placement in schools, temper tantrums, getting physical, and dealing with depression. Today my son is nine years old, only one grade behind, doing spectacular. He loves science; he's good in math, and a great speller. He's responsible, a natural leader, and very talkative. I thank God for my son's progress, and I am very proud of him. He's a fighter in a positive way; he adores Ironman, but he's my super hero.
