Total Articles: 1
In this interview we will be talking with Nicolas Ivanoff, a chiropodist in Woolwich and proprietor of the Feet by Pody clinic in Royal Arsenal.
(Interviewer) Q: Nicholas, can you tell us about your career to date?
(Nicolas) A: I qualified as a chiropodist several years ago and received my registration from the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and my membership of the Society of Chiropodist and Podiatrist (MChs). I then practiced at clinics in different parts of London, before setting up in my practice as a chiropodist in Woolwich.
Q: What made you choose to set up as a chiropodist in Woolwich?
A: I assessed what the need was for a chiropodist in Woolwich and I also analysed what the scope was for professional development. That was the start of my career as a chiropodist in Woolwich.
Q: What have been the main challenges you face as a chiropodist in Woolwich?
A: Most of the challenges I face in my profession are clinical, for examples expertise in terms of diagnosing and treating foot condition, so they apply to practices everywhere.
Q: What about the needs of the community in Woolwich, how do they differ?
A large proportion of my clients in Woolwich are people working long hours, often in the City, so my appointments list is managed very carefully to accommodate my clients' needs. So in many ways my work as a chiropodist in Woolwich is much the same as my work would be elsewhere, only with localised elements.
Q: What are the most common foot conditions you treat?
A: The most common condition I see as a chiropodist in Woolwich are verrucae, corns, and sport injuries. I also treat more complex conditions such as diabetic foot conditions, and faulty biomechanics within the feet.
Q: How do you diagnose what the problem with a patient's feet is?
A: Some foot conditions I will diagnose largely through careful visual analysis and tactile manual testing of the affected area. For example with a verruca, this is generally straightforward. Other conditions require gait analysis, and as a chiropodist in Woolwich I am qualified to deliver this.
Q: Can you tell us about one of the treatments your clinic offers?
A: Dry needling is a technique I use to remove verrucae. The patient receives a local anaesthetic, and I then use a needle to treat the verruca. Most people report only minor soreness for a few days, similar to a bruise.
Q: As a chiropodist in Woolwich what is your advice to someone who thinks they have a problem with their feet?
A: Get it seen to as soon as possible. As a chiropodist in Woolwich I always advise my patients to do that, as it can often minimise the effects of a condition.
