Development (Research & Development) and Innovation are key factors in the irrigation industry, which have enabled outstanding achievements with impressive productivity gains in the last century. Remarkable successes which energized and empowered the green revolution relied to a great extent on public funds supporting research in public institutions. Today, however, R&D plays a crucial role in the growth of private companies and consequently they are making sizable investments in Research & Development. There has been a paradigm shift in crop variety Research & Development over the past 30 years, which has evolved from being predominantly public to predominantly private.
Irrigation is the act of artificially water to soil to allow plant growth. It includes applying water to a lawn or garden. The term irrigation usually refers to providing large amount of water in arid or dry region to grow crops. Irrigation helps to protect against droughts where water is plentiful but uncertain.
World water resources are fast diminishing and normal irrigation is useful where water restrictions are not applied. ...
... Once water is low due to a drought and water restrictions are applied the inefficiencies of a poorly designed irrigation system quickly become apparent.
A New Irrigation System
In order to use the water resources wisely and irrigate intelligently, a new, effective irrigation process has been introduced i.e. Drip Irrigation. It is the slow, precise application of water and nutrients directly to the plants’ root zones in a predetermined pattern using a point source.
A true definition of drip irrigation is: “A drip irrigation, micro irrigation or trickle irrigation design can be customized to meet specific needs while maintaining an optimum moisture level within the root zones, efficiently conserving water that might otherwise be lost to non-growth areas, runoff, sun or wind, and providing the proper balance of water and air needed for successful plant growth.”
Drip irrigation was first designed and manufactured commercially in Israel.
Over the course of drip’s technical evolution….products and companies have come and gone leaving only proven ideas and products. As multi-national manufacturing giants engulf smaller irrigation companies, product research, development and production technologies merge to supply end users worldwide.
Drip Irrigation System delivers water to the crop using a network of mainlines, sub–mains and lateral lines with emission points spaced along their lengths. Each dripper/emitter, orifice supplies a measured, precisely controlled uniform application of water, nutrients, and other required growth substances directly into the root zone of the plant. Water and nutrients enter the soil from the emitters, moving into the root zone of the plants through the combined forces of gravity and capillary. In this way, the plant’s withdrawal of moisture and nutrients are replenished almost immediately, ensuring that the plant never suffers from water stress, thus enhancing quality, its ability to achieve optimum growth and high yield.
The use of drip (trickle) irrigation for vegetable production is rapidly increasing.
By 1995, nearly 100,000 acres of vegetables number of factors driving this conversion to drip irrigation, most important among them like increased crop yield potential, water conservation, reduced labour costs, fertilizer costs, pesticide cost, and more efficient nutrient management.
Drip irrigation is a tool of choice able to maximize distribution, nutrition, yields, and conversation like no other application method.
Drip ‘n’ Drip Irrigation System
Leading agriculture to the next green revolution, several private sector irrigation companies have witnessed spectacular progress from small operations to large integrated enterprises with advanced capabilities of variety development and irrigation production, conditioning, and marketing. Towing a similar line, Drip ‘n’ Drip Irrigations has been consistently focusing on R&D and innovation, meeting the exacting needs of the farmers and the agriculture industry and making significant contributions to irrigation R&D in India.
A New Focus
Drip ‘n’ Drip Irrigation has made giant strides in the new millennium with a distinctive and well defined focus on introducing new hybrids not only in cotton, but also in corn, rice and vegetables that benefit – farmers significantly through higher yields and superior quality produce. To achieve the above objective, Drip ‘n’ Drip Irrigation places a strong emphasis on research in its plant breeding programmes. Highly qualified and competent plant breeders work rigorously utilizing new germplasm and modern technologies to develop hybrids in different crops which possess higher resistance to pests, diseases and enhanced quality and offer extensive adaptability.
