A house is not a home unless it is adequately equipped with the proper furniture. Homeowners have plenty of leeway and infinite possibilities when it comes to furniture arrangement. There is no right or wrong way to arrange furniture; all that matters is that it satisfies your personal tastes and complements the surrounding décor. The following tips and tricks will also give you additional insight on how furniture can be best arranged to create a living environment that conforms to your preferences. Often, there is one piece of furniture that is the favorite in the room and is used as the focal point for other furniture. This may be a recently purchased sofa, recliner or couch. It may also be a table placed over a furnished Persian rug or a fireplace mantel. It can even be a décor item like a wall painting or a coffee table with a vase of flowers. Also be prepared to break out the tape measure. If you are in the midst of purchasing new furniture, then it helps to have an estimate of the dimension of the room as large furniture in a small room or small furniture in a spacious room often do not complement well. While various design ideas are available, one of the most basic arrangements is to place the main sofa or couch across from the focal point with surrounding and smaller furniture positioned and angled to face the same direction. Additional accessories like pillows, foot stools and ottomans can also be incorporated. By arranging this way, multiple occupants and guests can easily gather in close proximity to face a television screen, fireplace or for forming a conversational circle. Another option is to shoot for a classic symmetry look. This is done by placing either two sofas or one sofa and a pair of chairs across from one another with the main focal point at one end. This is a great arrangement for quiet activities, such as reading, working on a laptop or having a one-on-one conversation. A few other smaller tidbits of advice include the following: • Arrange furniture in a way so that foot traffic does not pass between the furniture and television. • Position furniture so that they are parallel to the wall. Positioning furniture diagonally may work as well though it may not be a good complement depending on the focal point and surrounding accessories. • Avoid placing furniture against a wall that flanks a walkway. • Consider a coffee or half-moon table placed adjacent to every piece of individual furniture When buying new furniture, there are so many styles and brands to select from. Coaster and Diamond Sofa are just two examples of trustworthy manufacturers that are out there. Of course, factors like budget will obviously be a concern; after all, furniture isn't cheap. However, keep in mind that the furniture you bring into your home will last for an upwards of at least 20 years. It is an investment that is worth spending a little more for high quality.
