The history of the Blackjack has represented a topic of interest throughout the centuries, although its exact origins are covered in uncertainty. The Blackjack as an independent and famous game is considered to go back to the early 18th century, when the French casino was starting to acquire impressive popularity.

The Blackjack: the origins of a famous card game

The Blackjack is officially linked to the French game of cards known as Vingt-et-Un, namely Twenty-One in English translation. The Vingt-et-Un fever, also called the Chemin de Fer or the French Ferme, turned the French casino into a major factor of influence for its European counterparts and its impact lead to the borrowing of the game in several other casino “cultures” across the continent.

Certain theories actually claim that the Blackjack is even older than widely assumed, more specifically that the Romans were the ones to invent this casino card game. The Romans are rumored to have invented a type of ancestor for this card game, consisting of playing with blocks made of wood, after they had been assigned specific numerical values.

The Blackjack has also been associated with the Spanish card game Trente-Un, mentioned by the famous writer Miguel de Cervantes in 1570.

The Blackjack card game reached new levels of popularity and it first became widely familiar in North America, as the French colonists migrated towards different areas worldwide. This casino game underwent several changes in terms of rules, differing from the original version. The previous edition of Blackjack allowed only the dealer to double and a betting round was added after each session of the card game. The casino version nowadays has much more flexible rules, which may have been partially granted due to its impressive, even overwhelming popularity.

And then the Vingt-et-Un became the Blackjack

The Vingt-et-Un card game changed its name to Blackjack around 1931, when the new politics of any casino resided in offering a hand featuring black jacks or, in other words, the Jack of spades. This card game continued to enjoy this policy of ensuring payout and the name that we all know today, employed in almost every casino around the world, was finally there to stay.

The history of the Blackjack is not easy to outline in terms of exact dates, associated names and specific locations. The card game that can still be played in the casino in this day of age has come a long way and its popularity is increasing with every step. The Blackjack has a real history in casino records and has managed to survive centuries of migrations and social changes. And a main reason behind this long-lasting fame is thought to be granted by the skills required. The Blackajack allows players to have control over the course of the card game and make decisions. This term coined by the Americans in the early 14th century has become a symbol for the casino experience and an iconic card game for players worldwide.
