Here, the term 'Kopi' is an Indonesian word and the term 'Luwak' originates from the Sumatra Island. In other words, this is an expensive beverage with its home nation as the Sumatra Islands of Indonesia. People, who have tasted this rare and expensive beverage will surely say that this is the tasty drink that they have ever consumed. It is considered as the gourmet coffee and it is also called as Weasel coffee. The beans of this particular brunette have their own flavor, taste and importance.

It is unique and exotic as compared to other gourmet beverages and this is the reason behind its huge cost. These animals live mostly in trees and they eat coffee cherries as their favorite food. Generally, they target the fully-ripened cherries and the pulp and the flesh of the fruits get digested in the stomach of these animals. But, the beans are let out of the stomach via the process of excretion. They stay in the stomach for a day or so, where the enzymes act on the beans. These processes give the beans the unique taste and aroma. The processes taking place within the stomach is responsible for the rich flavor and after the process they get excreted from the stomach.

These beans are collected from the excretion by the local farmers and they are sold to the manufacturers of kopi Luwak for brewing purpose. Generally, the locals are paid $20 for each KG of beans they are collecting. After processing, they are sold to international markets, at the rate of 600-700 US dollars per kilogram thereby making it the most expensive of the other Gourmet alternatives available. Only special coffee shops sell this beverage.
