Madurai in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu is the second largest city, located on the banks of river Vaigai, oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.It is also the oldest inhabited cities in the world and built around the well known Meenakshi temple and is divided into a number of quadrangular streets around the temple.Its Having good rail connectivity, the place has been an academic center of learning for culture, literature, art, music and dance for long back.

Apart from this the major attraction has been several paintings and sculptures.Nayak Palace is having polished black stone pillars of different heights and there is fact that King Thirumalai Nayak’s grandson has demolished majorly fine structure and removed most of the jewels and woodcarvings in order to build his own palace. Thirupparankundram Temple is located south of railway station and its innermost shrine is cut out of a solid rock.About approx. 21 kms to Madurai is Vishnu temple dedicated to Lord Alagar.The Gandhi museum exhibits the highlights of the freedom struggle and contains picture gallery of Gandhian movement. The glory of Madurai which was earlier went away has returned under the rule of the Vijayanagar kingdom.In earlier times the city was ruled by the Nayak Emperors. The place has been given different names like City of Junction , City of Jasmine,Temple city, and City of four junctions .Due to its active night life which is enjoyed by youngsters,its been given name as Thoonga Nagaram,means city that never sleeps. Apart from temples with good architectural designs and sculpures, the center of attraction has been the Chithrai Festival which takes place during mid April-May, during the Hindu month of Chithrai, when millions come for the carnival.The main events covered are flag hoisting,coronation of Meenakshi Amman,possession of Goddess,wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar,chariot and float procession.Another major thing is Jallikattu which coincides with Pongal festival in month of January.
