Competency Modeling: The Key To Business Success

Whether you run a small personal business with just a couple employees, or a large corporation, there are a few keys to ensuring maximum efficiency and productivity. Obviously two majors key points are great leadership and the best employees you can find. Putting customer service first is only possible if your employees are both capable and happy. This starts with leadership.
There are ways to ensure you form the most competent leaders in your industry. The qualitative Competency modeling is a method used by some of the most successful businesses to do just this. The modeling is fairly simply defined; it is the method used to track employee’s strongest skills and their relevance in the work place. This allows you as the employer to analyze your workforces skill set, where they need to improve, and if their skills' are applicable to your demands. With the knowledge provided by the competency modeling you are better able to mold the leaders you want and need. Competencies related to leadership are a specific branch that furthers the process. This specific branch keys in on individuals that you have deemed as possible leaders. Allowing you to further analyze these employees, after an employee shows that they have the capabilities to be strong leaders in your organization, this branch allows them to be further trained and molded. It focuses on the development of the already present leadership skills.
It is of the utmost importance to dial in on the leadership skills and strengthen them. Doing this, guides each leader not only to optimal performance, it forms them into stronger mentors for the lower level employees. Leaders that are looked up to and trusted by subordinates cause the entire workplace to perform at a much higher rate. Employees that trust and look up to their leaders give more of themselves to their jobs. These same employees also show much more pride in their work, along with a greater desire for the company to do well.
Though this competency modeling is essential to furthering the development of a company, they will not answer all your problems. It is inevitable that bad apples will find their way into every workplace. Leaders still have to be cognizant of their own actions and make sure that they are setting not only the right examples, but also putting proper policies and procedures into place. If you are allowing poor planning or procedures to be initiated, or improper enforcement of policies to take place; you are essentially undermining all the hard work done by the models of competency. Be sure to use all your tools to their maximum potential; if done properly your business could be far more productive than you had ever dreamed.
