Dogs live in a world of scent, and their sense of smell is their most refined sense. For most dog owners, the expression "work like a dog" doesn't make much sense. While the typical canine companion certainly gives his owner immeasurable happiness, its obvious that he lives a life of remarkable leisure. Guide dogs, a type of assistance dog, are trained to help people in life with disabilities. Also known as seeing eye dogs, they are specifically trained to lead blind and visually impaired people, helping them nevigate situations or obstacles they normally would not be able to. Guide dogs are one of the most familiar sorts of working dog, provide an individual service to humans. Everyday they help their masters get from place to place more safely. While dealing their handler, guide dogs are trained to do a number of things, including maintaining a steady pace, ignoring distraction, including smells, other animals and people stopping at curvs and tops and bottoms of steps until instructed to proceed, helping their handler board public transportation and obeying verbal commands among other skills. Service dog is the catch all term for any dog that helps a physically or mentally disabled person. Not every person or disability is the same. We believe that not every service dog should be trained in the same way. Golden and Labrador retrievers, German shepherds and other larger breeds are normally used as guide dogs because of their size, they are able to lead their handlers or prevent them from walking in to dangerous situations. Breeds may vary however, as long as the dog embodies the characteristics that are essential to good guide dogs. They must have controll on their temperament. Guide dogs must remain focused on their task, and not become easily distracted by loud noise or unfamiliar smells and sights. They must be calm and friendly. Dogs trained to be guide dogs must be intelligent. However guide dogs must be intelligent enough to know when to disobey a command that puts the owner in danger. For ex: if a dog is asked to cross the street while cars are coming, he must know to disobey. Guide dog must be large enough to lead their owners while wearing a harness. Guide dogs have to be healthy. If guide dogs exhibit hip abnormalities such as hip dysplasia, they are retired from service work. Guide dogs truly are the eyes of their handlers, helping them to establish mobility and independence.
