Also known as wolfberries, goji berries have been steadily growing in popularity during the latest years, and are consumed by many celebrities and public figures. Their usage can be traced back to thousands of years ago, when they were commonly used as medicine to treat many diseases. In fact, many call them “super berries” due to their claimed medicinal properties, but what exactly are goji berries and what are their benefits?
Goji berries grow originally in Asia, particularly in certain areas in China, and they are bright orange-red fruits which have been used for thousands of years not only as food but also as medicine. They taste somewhat like cherries and cranberries, and they are therefore very enjoyable, and can be consumed in many ways. They are mainly found as dried fruits since they are very sensitive and drying them is the best way to preserve them. Dried goji berries can be eaten raw and they can also be cooked. These berries are also used to make various drinks, such as wine, herbal tea and the famous goji berry juice.
These berries are very commonly called “super berries” because they are very rich in nutrients. Like other berries, for example, they are extremely rich in antioxidants, but apart from that they also contain all essential amino acids making them very nutritious and unique among all fruits. Apart from containing the highest concentration of amino acids, they are also very rich in fiber and contain high levels of minerals such as iron and calcium. It is easy to see why a fruit that contains all these beneficial substances would be called a super berry, and it is also easy to understand why in the past they were used as medicine!
Since goji berries are packed with nutrients, they are obviously very beneficial to our health. Due to their high levels of antioxidants, goji berries boost our immune system, and research has shown they can also protect against aging! Wolfberries are in fact known as the “fountain of youth” as they are believed to help keep the body young and to prevent against aging and age-related diseases.
Apart from this, the Vitamin A they contain also helps improve our eyesight. Goji berries have long been known to also help against diabetes, high blood pressure and they also aid the digestive process. Some other studies have shown that goji berries can also help to protect the liver and boost the brain’s activity. It is commonly believed, also, that these super berries can help fight against cancer, and while there isn’t enough proof to sustain this belief, knowing that goji berries are bursting with all these nutrients makes it worth it to eat them anyway!
Native to China, goji berries can now be found around the whole globe, and while they were used for their medicinal properties many years ago, they are still enjoyed today because of their delicious and enjoyable taste and the fact that they are extremely nutritious, providing the human body with most of the nutrients it needs to function properly on a daily basis.
