Getting The Best Rates With Cheap Car HireBy Expert Author: Vikram Kumar
You could be an occasional traveler or even a regular one, but getting cheap car hire rates is one way of saving on your travel and vacation costs. The car rental business is very competitive and most will push you into getting upgraded and buy their insurance, but you are not obliged to opt for all these things. The one way to get cheap car hire is to opt for a smaller car and also decline all the special offerings. You can research car rental companies on various travel websites and compare going rates that are being offered by various companies. Booking online has some distinct advantages.
You are able to view rates and details of numerous companies at one place, compare the prices and deals and also avail of online discounts, if any. Opt for less luxurious, smaller and compact cars. It goes without saying that when you rent a larger or a more luxurious car, you will end up spending more. Effectively, this adds to your travel cost. It makes sense to book a larger vehicle like a SUV if you are travelling with family or a larger group. But if it is only you are travelling alone or with just a couple of people, opt for a compact car.
Plan in advance, book early and on a weekly basis. Booking a couple of weeks in advance will get you a good deal. It is the same with flight bookings. You should plan in advance as the rates are always cheaper. In some cases, last minute flights can also be cheaper as airlines want to fill up seats and they lower the rates. Some airlines cater primarily to business travelers and offer better weekend rates for last minute flights. On the other hand, the airlines that cater to vacationers and revelers will end up having cheaper weekday rates.
Make wise choices when you are booking tickets. Check online and be a little flexible with the dates and times that you are booking for. Try to maintain a wider booking window and also see if travelling from a smaller airport suits you. This can turn out to be a cheaper option. Once you have booked your air ticket, look for good car rental deals. Do not opt for rental insurance. Most rental companies will press you into paying for insurance, but in most cases, it is not really required. If you already have a comprehensive insurance, the car that you are driving is also insured and some policies also cover rental cars.
Another way of saving on car rental is to sign up for their membership program. If you travel and rent cars regularly, join rental companies’ paid memberships. These generally offer free upgrades, air miles and other benefits. Opt out of the offered conveniences and avoid upgrades to larger vehicles. Larger vehicles mean you end up spending more on gas. You should also look at city-based car rental companies instead of airport based ones as the latter tend to be more expensive.
