What makes a phone a smartphone? Is it its capability of communication or sending text messages? Is it its camera for capturing videos and photos? Is it the Bluetooth to quickly stream data between two devices? Well these features were already available when phones were not smart. But what make a phone smartphone are GPS, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Proximity Sensor, Ambient Sensor, and Near Field Communication (NFC).

Let us have a look on the uses of GPS, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Proximity Sensors, Ambient Sensor, and NFC in smart devices:

GPS (Global Positioning System):
GPS is a satellite based navigation system that provides all the information like time, weather, places etc. at the real time. Smartphone devices are now manufactured with built in GPS chips. There are many advantages with it like it doesn’t matter where you are what weather condition are you in, it can easily navigate you. It is also useful for enterprises working in field force with the help of GPS they can easily track employees and direct them. Accelerometer:
Technically Accelerometer is used to measure the acceleration. And in smart devices it is used for various purposes like clicking pictures in the night. Yes clicking clearer photos in night has been made possible with the help of Accelerometer. The built in accelerometer triggers the shutter when it detects camera is stable.

Gyroscope:
Gyroscope we all know why gyroscope is used for i.e. maintaining the orientation. In smart devices it is used for the same, we can rotate screen to comfortable level. Yes, you can tilt your device anywhere and screen will be tilted according to you. It is also used in gaming mobile applications, like racing games. All you have to do is tilt the screen in order to navigate vehicle or character in the game.

Proximity Sensors:
Well proximity sensors are used to detect nearby object without having any physical contact. In smart devices it is used for number of purpose like switching the display dark or bright automatically. Mobile applications are there that allows you to receive and disconnect calls using sensors.

Ambient Sensor:
Ambient Sensor as the name suggests sensing the change occurred. It provides help in adjusting backlight and also acts as power saving function for smart devices.

Near Field Communication (NFC):
NFC is one of the latest communication protocols. With the help of NFC enabled device you can transfer your funds just by taking you device close to the source. It will replace the way m-commerce transaction takes place. Australian Federation railway has already deployed a ticket-stamping machine that can be used to purchase mobile tickets.

Mobile application development with the help of these smart sensors has taken application development to the next level. As with smart devices they are giving look and feel of the future.
