Most likely one of the most famous forms of martial arts throughout the world is Karate. This is possibly because it has all the elements that you will want in a martial art. In Karate, you'll be able to engage in competitions around the world or you can learn it to help you get fit in both mind and body or you can use the skills to help you look after yourself and your family. Karate which is Japanese for empty hand combines kicks, blows and strikes in an all round system that can be mastered by men, women and kids. As a matter of fact, it is possible to get your entire family involved with Karate. If you're curious about what would be involved in the average Karate class, this article will give you a basic overview.

You'll find that there are different kinds of Karate with different emphasis on either power or speed. A kick off point in most classes is warming up with stretches and exercises. The stretches and exercises are essential in developing our flexibility so we can execute those fancy kicks and moves. It's very important to be well conditioned and well toned so these warm ups are required. You'll see that after taking just a few Karate class sessions, you'll be feeling much stronger and more focused than you ever have.

When your warm up is complete, you will then begin working on certain Karate techniques. Each movement, every stance and every feet placement is crucial to your success in Karate so you will be doing a lot of repetitions of a certain move until it is done correctly. Of course, the teacher will demonstrate the move to you then you do it yourself. The regular repetition will help make the moves you master become part of your instinct so that when you do a specific strike, it all comes to you easily.

In Karate, there is a term known as "kata" which is a sequence involving a series of kicks, blocks and strikes. If you happen to go to a Karate event you will often see kata performed and these are all skills you will learn as you progress through the grading system. Also in a typical class, you'll get to spar with a person who is at the same skill level as you. It's to help you obtain some real experience with an individual and help you determine where you stand in your learnings. The sparring will often only involve light contact but you will gain valuable experience of distance and angles when trying different types of strikes.

As you get to the conclusion of lesson, you're going to be cooling down by doing a number of stretches. It is actually fair to say that each club will have their own way of doing things but in most cases this gives you an idea of what to expect if you enroll in a Karate club.
