Steps Before You Decide On Your Cancer Treatment
Total Articles: 32
You heard the bad news that you have cancer. No matter how destructive it is to you, you have to begin setting your priorities now. Your doctor has offered you several treatment options. It is either you let him choose which ones will give you higher chances of survival or you allow yourself to become your doctor’s partner in making decisions for your cancer treatment. If you opt for the latter, you may want to consider these steps:
1. Determine your level of participation.
Just how much are you willing to take part in the management of your cancer? Do you want the doctor to give you the options and decide from there? Or, will you also do your own research, discuss with him the data that you have gathered and the treatments that he will want to recommend to you and work from there? Know how far your involvement will go so you can prepare yourself, as well as your doctor.
2. Seek help from your family members and loved ones.
Another technique in making decisions for your cancer treatment is to talk with the people you love about your condition. Share with them the details of the possible medical procedures that you will have to undergo, including the time required and costs involved. They may express their willingness to offer you financial assistance and/or to go with you during doctor visits, treatment schedules and others. Some may even share their knowledge about what they know about your condition and may provide useful input that will subsequently help you decide.
3. Be focused.
Do not allow yourself to be distracted by certain issues like pain, cash flow and others. You need to stay focus with cancer treatment. You have to choose which methods you are more comfortable with.
4. Check your insurance coverage.
Another thing that will have an impact in your choices of treatment is your finances. Do you think you have enough cash in your bank account to fund everything? Do you have health insurance? Check your coverage, limitations and others so as to avoid future problems from arising. To be sure, you may call the insurance company.
5. Learn the side effects.
Some or most treatments and medicines have side effects; hence, you must discuss about these with your doctor so you can weigh your options better. Are you willing to experience everything to live longer or are the side effects too much for you to endure? Ask your doctor how he plans to deal with these side effects so you are assured of lesser pain and suffering.
Always keep in mind that you decide to become a partner of your doctor in your cancer management. For this reason, you have to understand everything that relates to your condition so you can provide input in making decisions for your cancer treatment. If there are issues or information that you do not fully comprehend, do not hesitate to ask. Likewise, you may take down notes of everything that is discussed so you can review them from time to time or you can keep them as future reference.
