Buying cheap chewing gum can help prevent cavities only when it is sugar-free. This can be a good habit for the kids. Of course, you would not want them to chew gums in school during lectures. However, they can chew gums before and after school.

Kids in school are punished for chewing gum in school. Additionally, it was said that chewing gum is bad as it causes cavities. However, the story seems to be changing off late.

Now, we see a number of blogs and articles coming up in favor of cheap chewing gum, noting that chewing gum can actually prevent cavities in children. So, can someone tell their children to chew gum to prevent cavities?

Well, not in every case.

Buying cheap chewing gum can help prevent cavities only when it is sugar-free. This can be a good habit for the kids. Of course, you would not want them to chew gums in school during lectures. However, they can chew gums before and after school.

How does it help in case of cavities?

There are many bacteria in a human mouth. One specific cause for this is streptococcus mutans, which are related to the section ...
... of bacteria that cause strep throat. When this bacteria comes in contact with sugar, it produces acid. To counter this, saliva comes in and neutralizes acid. This helps the teeth to handle some exposure. However, when there is consumption of sugary beverages or candy, it can possible overwhelm saliva. If there is prolonged exposure to this acid, the protective enamel on teeth can be damaged. This process is called “demineralization”, which leads to cavities.

When cheap chewing gum comes into the picture, it increases saliva production, helping neutralize more acid. However, if it is not a sugar-free chewing gum, it will not really help the cause. Reason being that from one end it is neutralizing the acid and from the other end it is adding the load on saliva with the sugary taste. So, without a sugar-free chewing gum, we will be back to square one.

If cheap chewing gum has xylitol, the problem can be fixed. Xylitol, basically, is a naturally occurring sweetener found in fruits and vegetables that has fewer calories than regular sugar. Xylitol ensures that there will be more of saliva and less acid to help remineralize teeth. So, it reserves some cavities.

At the same time, cheap chewing gum with xylitol prevents the strep bacteria from growing. Once it inhibits the growth, this bacteria will not be able to metabolize the sweetener. Xylitol leaves a positive mark for years, but it works best when a person chews cheap chewing gum regularly.

In case of children, if chewing gum is in their routine before their adult teeth are developed, that is from the age of five or six, it can be beneficial for them. Otherwise though, if children can chew gums on a regular basis during their school days, it can help them get into a routine which will help them prevent cavities.

The best practice will be to chew cheap chewing gum for five minutes three to five times a day.

Like coffee and chocolate, now we see gum being rehabilitated. So, buying sugar-free cheap chewing gum should not be an issue for anyone, and buying it from an on-line gum store can help you restrict your monetary outflow.
