Most people will take supplements such as vitamins and minerals, but very few of us will maintain a healthy diet to improve the quality of our body and lives. What you should do is have whole food sources in your diet that can provide the vitamins and minerals that you need, opposed to taking synthetic supplements. Eating healthy food should be your number one priority in regard to getting essential nutrients from your diet. Your focus should be ingesting food that has all of the nutrients that you need and to use supplements to fill in what might be missing. Individuals that are vegetarians, as they do not eat meat, would be lacking B-12 in their diet, therefore necessitating the use of vitamins as a supplement. However, you shouldn't rely too much on supplements, as it's better to get your nutrition from real food.

Some consider skipping meals a good thing because they are taking in smaller portions of calories. Usually by skipping a meal, you are more likely to eat more the next time you eat. If you have to skip a meal, make sure it is not breakfast; this meal energizes your body which enables you to perform your day and allows you the time to work off some of those calories. Rather than skipping meals, it's best to eat smaller portions more frequently. It is a good idea to stretch your calorie intake out, because this is the way calories are used.

Some believe that cooking your foods is taking away important nutrients and it most likely is; raw veggies are better for you anyway and will enhance your diet. There are raw foods diets that suggest eating nothing but raw foods, but this is an extreme that most people aren't going to go to. In reality, it is not essential to consume only raw foods to in order to have optimal health. There are loads of foods that are delicious when eaten raw, such as fruits, vegetables, many nuts and seeds and the list goes on and on. There are raw animal products comprised in some of the raw food diets, which involve cheese, milk, fish and even meat (which needs to be eaten according to certain standards). It is not essential that you eat all foods raw or cold in order to gain from their healthy properties and they are considered raw up until the temperature of 104 degrees.

Healthy foods are everywhere in your grocery stores now, so start taking advantage of them. Eating unhealthy foods can become a habit just like eating healthy foods can become one too, you just have to focus. Learning to make better choices will be hard, but it will lead to better health.
