If you have a dog that does something right, like sitting when you're getting out the leash, you should give the animal lots of praise and affection. This will show your dog that the behavior he is exhibiting is just what you are looking for. He'll learn that praise will come when he is good, too.

Take your time to teach your dog what kind of behavior is right or wrong as soon as it occurs. If you ignore it, it will be hard to contain it later. If your dog is not under control, he could end up hurting you or someone else.

Speak with your vet about the amount of food you should be feeding your dog each day. Some people feed the dog based on their food package recommendations, but these can be wrong and cause them to be overweight. Speak with your vet and work out an appropriate eating plan for your dog.

Train your dog how to properly walk when on a leash. Your dog should learn to walk by the side of you, teach them to 'heel'. This will not only make your walks more enjoyable, but it will also help keep your dog safe. The heel command is crucial for your dog, even if a loose leash walk is being used.

Follow your vet's advice when it comes to medications and special care requirements. Dogs may resist wearing cones, but they are there for good reason. When a vet makes a recommendation, it is for the safety and health of your dog; if you ignore them, that can lead to trouble.

It is not uncommon for dogs to get cuts on their paws from stepping on pieces of glass and debris. If your dog suffers from a little cut, it should be washed with some form of antiseptic and the bandaged. If you believe your dog has a deep cut, you need to visit your vet.
