Do not get tied down wondering how to write a TV treatment. If you have a good idea for a TV show, give it a formal shape, let the world share it too and grab the opportunity to bask in the glory of the distinction that ensues. Set sail on the exciting voyage of writing for TV by initially creating a treatment to draw the attention of the development executives. The best way to learn how to write a TV treatment is to read as many of them as you can lay your hands on. Observe how they have been dealt with, their pace, format, what aspects stand out, what made them hits or misses. Consider the following points:
• A TV treatment is basically a long synopsis; a story for a TV episode that is not has not yet been molded into a script form. Pay attention to the duration of the show - whether an hour of it or half an hour and craft a treatment accordingly.
• There are enough books about writing for the TV and websites which provide on-line tutorials and software to teach a novice how to write a TV treatment.
• There is a vast variety of TV shows. Decide on the one which you would like to take up and proceed along the requirement for it.
• Unlike movies that run continually, TV shows have commercial breaks in between. When preparing a treatment for the TV, set time aside for them. Just prior to a break and at the end of it incorporate something exciting so that the spectators are encouraged to continue watching. The episode itself must terminate with a cliff-hanger, igniting a curiosity in the audience.
• Theoretical knowledge is essential for writing treatments but experience alone can teach you the aspect of 'how'. To write a TV treatment, study the existing programs and be extremely observant. A catchy title and logline are an important part of the treatment.
• Specify the number of locations that will be used as well as the number of characters and their relation to one another.
• Concentrate on the pilot episode of your series. This is the one which will make or break its popularity.
• Include all elements of interest in the treatment. You can add a few important dialogues.
• Treatments are used to showcase your capabilities plus exactly how sustainable your story is going to be.
They are a tool to persuade the executives of the TV channel to buy your script and bring it to life on the big screen. Your success depends entirely on how well versed you are in how to write a TV treatment.
Once they give their nod of consent, you can move forward with greater gusto and produce a masterpiece of a script for a TV show. Simple as it may sound, each of the steps involved in reaching the top most rung of the ladder is slightly trickier. Write with a passion, in prose form, and use present tense. Do not let your treatment run beyond 8-15 pages in length, approximately 10 percent of the completed film script.
