Treatments are ideal diagnostic tools for the writer. A treatment allows the writer to view the work objectively. It shows up the flaws in the story, if any. The writer can then proceed to rectify the errors before beginning the journey of writing a script. The timely corrective action can save on his resources - time, energy and money. Treatments are also excellent creative tools for a writer. Writing a treatment improves his ability to discern the important elements from the unimportant ones. After all, treatments have to be limited in length and cannot contain all the details.
It is not possible to copyright an idea, but a treatment can be protected by registering it with Writers Guild of America or any other such authoritative body. Writing a treatment is time consuming. There is no short-cut to success. You have to put in a lot of hard work, spend a number of sleepless nights and be willing to forgo leisure time. Gradually the craft can be perfected. Your aim should be to compile viable treatments which the viewers would want to see on the screen. It must be borne in mind that a treatment is not an end but a means to an end. With this in view, you can create the most stimulating synopsis - worth filming.
Treatments are meant to convey your story in the best possible way and quickly. Although there are no stipulated standards for the ideal length of a treatment, brevity is its essence without forfeiting the essence of the story. Writing a treatment that is too long is not likely to be read. The top brass in the film industry do not have time to read the thousands of manuscripts they receive regularly. What they seek is a short summary of the screenplay in the form of treatments that are meticulously written. So, if you want to step into the glamorous world of writers, polish up your proficiency in putting together treatments that tell and sell. Treat a treatment like a trailer of the movie. Give it visual effects so that the readers can "see" the story.
When writing a treatment, break it up into a 3 act structure. Remember to include:
• Your name and contact information
• A working title
• WGA number
• A logline
• Introduction to all the key characters
• As few dialogues as possible
• All the important scenes, why, how, when, what and who of the story.
• A dramatic beginning, intriguing middle and an explosive end
Brilliant ideas and the ability to write do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. It is possible to hire professional writers to give shape to your ideas. You can find an affordable and capable writer by visiting websites, reading samples, and communicating with the ghostwriter for hire.
