Modestly, freezing the pipe is a non-intrusive, measured method of isolating a short sector of pipe, by hardening the pipe contents to form a locked ice plug which in turn comprises the flow of the liquid whilst an alteration technique is carried out. The main benefits are that a 'break-in' can be executed without undergoing the cost and down-time of a wide-ranging system draining down the line.

The stoppage process varies with the time, depending on the size of the pipe and its contents. To freeze the water for a longer time period hydrocarbon oils and other chemicals can be taken up to four times so that the water can be freeze for extended time period.
