Write, write, write and write. The truth of the matter is if you want to become a screenwriter you need to write. Script writing takes practice. And the more you write, the better you will become.
Script writing and becoming a screenwriter does not happen over night. It takes time to perfect your craft land your story telling technique. Let us take a look at the novice. Someone who is just starting out to become a screenwriter, where do you begin when writing a screenplay?
Perhaps you have only dabbled in writing stories. And have written a few short stories. Perhaps you have even taken a few creative writing classes during the years. But inside you have always had this burning desire to become a screenwriter. Where do you begin?
There are 4 ways in which you can get started with your screenwriting career. And they are the following:
First, and foremost, you must start writing. Turn those short story ideas into sellable screenplays. Start by jotting down any of those ideas you have been thinking about. Read over the stories you may have written in the past. See if any of them go together. Is there a theme being represented in your thought pattern? Can any of these stories become a sellable screenplay?
What style of writing do you prefer? That is a very important question to answer. Maybe your style leans toward romantic tales. Or maybe you prefer the action adventure type. Knowing the market your screenplay fits into is part of the marketing picture. Keep that in mind when you are writing your screenplay and trying to master the technique of script writing.
Second, find a literary agent to represent you and your film script. When searching for a literary agent to represent you, try to find one that will handle the genre that your film script is written in. That is a very important thing to remember when finding a literary agent. Submit your film scripts to the literary agents that handle your genre. You will have a less chance of rejection.
Third, sell a screenplay. Selling a screenplay puts you into the game. Now you have leverage. Something tangible that will set you apart from other screenwriters. You are finally on the road to become a screenwriter.
Fourth, believe in yourself. This is one of the most important elements to any creative venture that you pursue. You must believe in yourself and your talents.
