Face on putters enjoys certain distinctive advantages which helps them to better their golfing skills. The first advantage is that a golfer can judge the alignment and distance better compared to traditional side on putting. The second advantage is that it enables golfers to put strokes easily without too much body movement and can also make repeated strokes effortlessly which helps during competitions. The third advantage is the stroke motion which resembles the natural underhand stroke motion when people pitch soft ball, horseshoes and pennies. The fourth advantage is better accuracy. This technique allows golfers to make simple, straight-back and straight-through strokes. The fifth advantage is consistency. Golfers can maintain a smooth tempo because of the long putter length. The sixth advantage is better control over distance. Golfers while putting strokes can vary the length and therefore can quickly learn to control distance. The seventh advantage is that to follow this technique golfers have to maintain an upright posture and this puts less strain on their back enabling them to practice for long hours.
To practice the face on putting technique, a putter that has been optimized to this technique is required. Face on putters has certain distinctive features. The length varies from 44 to 54 inches and the lie angle is 10 degrees upright. The sight lines are uncluttered and there is no loft thereby eliminating the possibility of directional error. The weight can be adjusted to meet the requirements of varying playing conditions. And it has got a soft feel and excellent roll due to vertical face grooves.
Coming to the long putter technique, it helps a golfer to smoothen his putting stroke on all putts particularly in three to four foot range. Long putters’ reviews term this is as a great advantage. Golfers using the long putter technique can follow two stroke methods. The first method is called ‘Rock the Shoulders’ and the second method is called ‘Do Not Rock the Shoulders’. A golfer using the first method has to keep his arms and legs fixed. The shoulders should be rocked back and forth down towards the line of target. However, most golfers do not recommend this method. On the other hand, most golfers could produce better results by following the second method. In this method, a golfer has to hold the butt of the club using the forefinger and thumb of his left hand. At the same time he has to anchor his left wrist against his upper chest. The putter is pulled back and pushed through on a straight line by using the right arm/hand. The advantage is that a golfer can achieve maximum pendulum flow with minimum body part movement.
