A make-believe story concocted from the fabric of the mind of a writer is what we know as fiction. In print, this creative result of human imagination is called NOVEL. The human mind as we know it is not bound by the laws of nature like gravity or societal norms and acceptable behavior. The mind can conjure ideas and materials that challenge our cognitive perception and psychological concept of the permissible.
Fiction is the product of the human mind targeted at particular readers for the predominant purpose of entertainment. In doing this the writer engages information that may expose readers to his culture and world view. Another writer may touch on topical issues of social consciousness or a call to action towards a cause, for example: climate change, environmental degradation, animal protection, poverty alleviation, et cetera. Another writer may offer ideas that prior to the reading of his novel were not general knowledge.
Intricately layered in the work of fiction is information, education, exposition or even a rallying call, however delicate it may be. Despite the many understated purposes and messages to fiction or a novel the dominant goal must first be entertainment. In a fast paced world where information is by the seconds through various media engaged in a brutal contest to win their share of a person's twenty-four hours, the purpose for picking up a novel as against a news paper or a social media gadget is purely escapist. This reader, perhaps desires to step away from the routine and stress of perpetual rat race. He or she may want to relax and slow down the pace.
If this hypothetical person wanted to learn about the state of the nation he would have switched on the news or gone to pick up a news paper. Reading about the pitiful and hopeless state of the nation from a writer's biased and limited point of view in a work of fiction as the main content may just be too heavy a burden to place on a reader that picked up a novel in the few hours he or she had in the week to relax.
With a similar wave of imagination, attempt to visualize why a reader would desire to read a novel for the main purpose of education when he could have gone to the library to pick up an encyclopedia instead. A novel in all the numerous ideas and contents it may carry must predominantly be entertaining. It may lend ideas of social consciousness, religion, education or information to take on its own life, but a writer must not jettison the feel good characteristic of a novel. It must not lost its first and most important calling and purpose: ENTERTAINMENT.
Yes the entire concept of your novel may be exciting, intriguing, romantic, action packed, breathtaking et cetera; be sure to leave a smile on the face of your reader when he or she turns the last page. A smile, not a sigh, burden or just a bewildered look. A smile that puts the spring back in their steps, the sun light back in their day and an inspiration in their hearts.
