According to the United States OSHA, it is the employer’s duty to ensure that the work environment is free of hazards and that employees are able to perform all their tasks in safety. A job safety analysis of a JSA helps employers analyze all the ergonomics in a work space and eliminate all hazards. A JSA may also be known as a SJA or a Safe job Analysis. Once the analysis has been completed and the changes instituted, the on-the-job hazards can be eliminated in a more effective manner. The OSHA also provides different safety manuals for different industries and these can be used as a guideline.

Depending on the industry there will be different kinds of hazards that may be of less or more relevance. Let’s take a look at the different kinds of hazards. The risk or the safety manager of an organization carries out the JSA. Different observers will make a list of all the hazards in the workplace and this information will then be collated. The observers will look for hazards such as frayed electrical cords, defective generators and electrical equipment. The other kinds of hazards that will be looked into in a SJA are performance hazards. Work safety analysis includes this aspect as well.

The specific duties of all the employees are evaluated. Factors such as the amount of time that they perform these duties are also taken into account. For example, heavy lifting for extended periods of time may cause accidents and injuries. This kind of an activity may be inspected to ensure that employees who are performing that kind of job have undergone the necessary training to do that job in a safe manner. The next kind of hazards is ergonomic hazards. The observers will evaluate workstation ergonomics. A badly designed workstation or chair or even an ill-lit workstation can prove to be an issue.

Employees who sit at a workstation, at their computer for extended periods of time may experience issues like musculoskeletal pains and aches which have the potential to become chronic in the long run. The workstation should be set up in such a manner that the employees are able to perform their tasks safely and comfortably. A meeting will then be conducted with all the employees and there will be a discussion about the JSA. This is part of the safety program that the company has to carry out. Employee input is important as it provides an inside view of their specific job.

Once that step has been completed, a review of the employee illnesses and accident history will have to be carried out. This will incorporate a review about near-miss events as well as equipment losses, if any. Employees will have to be interviewed to identify hazards, either existing or potential and methods of control or elimination will have to be devised. If any of the hazards have been identified as ones that have the potential to cause any immediate harm, those should be dealt without any delay.
