These days, it is now possible to print cards on almost all kinds of materials. The general business cards though are still printed on a card stock which is at least 12 point thick.
These modern business cards have appeared through different routes in history. If we go back a few centuries ago, we still lived in a world of monarchs and dignitaries. People of high social stature followed specific customs which cost a lot of money and resources. These customs were not only based on courtesy symbols but also represented a more civilized lifestyle than that used by a common man of the time. People used visiting cards in Europe in those days. These were simply playing cards on which people signed or wrote a small personal note. It was a recognized custom to present your card when you showed up at the home of a dignitary. It was considered very ill manner to view other people’s visiting cards. The visiting cards were usually placed in a tray and examined by the house lady to determine the importance of different visiting people as well as their visiting purpose to generate a required response. The same trend came to be followed in the high social circles of the United States. These kinds of customs though never had any background or following in people of low status and rural areas.
The second trend of using cards was presented by merchants where they used simple printed cards to market their products as well as providing maps and guides on how to reach them in a city. The cards were also used as promissory notes in many cases. As marketing methods grew and found new resources, the use of trading cards naturally diminished. The modern living methods have also decreased the difference of living standard among people of various social standings. Basic facilities are now available to almost all people especially in the developed world. All these factors led to the arrival of modern business cards which are not only used for formal introductions but also provide an insight into the social status of a person by his or her association with a successful company or business.
