Originally this agreement was ratified outside the purview of the European Union, but in 1997 finally all the members of EU except United Kingdom came to conclusion and agreement and ratified the Schengen treaty.
The implementation of this understanding has finally resulted in removal of internal border controls between 25 nations (22 EU members and 3 non EU nations). This has also bought in reduction of beaurocratic hurdles in trade. With this treaty in full force in all the Schengen countries the travelers do not need to stop at the border control posts to show their IDs.
On being granted this Schengen Visa you would have an unrestricted freedom to travel to and through the expanse of the Schengen area without having to obtain entry permit for each of the Schengen countries. You would travel through the expanse of the Schengen zone in a similar way you would travel through different states and provinces of a single political boundary.
It is although highly recommended to the travelers of non EU that they must always carry their Schengen Immigration Visa stamped passport to be produced before the official in instance of being asked for. Since the ratification of this agreement every member country has started issuing this permit for the short term travel and it has been classified under different heads as per the requirements i.e.
Type A visa is granted to transit travelers for entry into Schengen zone airports for boarding connecting flights.
Type B visa granted to transit passengers traveling by road. The tenure of this permission is upto 5 days.
Type C visa is chiefly short stay entry permission or traveling permission with varying validity tenure. The tenure relies on objective of travel to Schengen area
Type D is for long stay periods and lasts beyond 3 months.
This unique arrangement that has eased off the regulatory burden off the travelers and beaurocratic pressure off the authorities of the member states ahs also enabled and facilitated creation of an integrated data base, coordinated and harmonized Visa grant laws and qualification parameters. The permission stamp has also been merged into a single style and carries same features in stamping from any of the consulates of member nations.
To obtain Schengen Immigration permit you need to approach the consulate of the country from where you intend to start your journey or where the principal purpose of your journey lies. You would need to make submission of completed application kit at the relevant embassy that must necessarily include your
Completed application form which must be affixed with
Passport size photos of desired size
Duly endorsed by you
Documents evidencing your objective of travel
Overseas insurance etc.
