So, you’ve come to the conclusion that your company is big enough and messy enough to merit paying for an outside, commercial cleaning service to come in and clean up after you and your staff.

When you finally make the decision to budget for an outside commercial cleaning services company for your offices, the last thing you should have to worry about is a threat to your health, or that of your staff.

Believe it or not, not all commercial cleaning services are vetted by company owners before hiring. And, many that are may often be overlooked for their ability to deliver safe cleaning services, specifically overlooking things like mold on surfaces and other areas.

This issue was highlighted recently in a very serious case in which as compounding pharmacy at the center of an ongoing outbreak of fungal meningitis and other infections pointed fingers at its own commercial cleaning company as the culprit behind unsanitary conditions the case suggests are linked to more than 650 infections and 39 deaths in the U.S. Federal health regulators found fungi in three lots of tainted steroids linked to infections ...
... and deaths and more fungi and bacteria in other drugs made by the New England Compounding Center (NECC).

Unfortunately, the NECC has since doing business after several law suits were filed against it, accusing the compounding pharmacy of selling tainted steroid injection drugs, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Unfortunately the company’s claims have yet to be supported.

Reports suggest that federal health regulators found fungi in three lots of tainted steroids linked to infections and deaths and more fungi and bacteria in other drugs made by NECC. In addition, Food and Drug Administration inspectors found evidence of contamination documented throughout the NECC facility and dating from January 2012 through September. In some cases, surfaces were overgrown with visible mold, inspectors said.

UniFirst provided services through its UniClean business as specified by NECC and using NECC’s own “defined cleansing solutions,” UniFirst spokesman Adam Soreff told NBC News in a statement. UniClean technicians cleaned approximately one and a half hours each month!

That’s not a lot of time to do so much damage, if in fact, the mold is ever proven to be linked to the issue.

The cleaning company says it was not involved in NECC’s daily operations and is in no way responsible for NECC’s day-to-day operations, its overall facility cleanliness, or the integrity of the products they produced.”

This is, of course, a worse-case scenario for this company. Nonetheless, the lesson is clear: when you hire an outside cleaning service you should know who you are going to be letting into your facility, what kinds of products they use and, most important, request at least three testimonials from the company.

Call those references! It’s not enough to get a list of clients who will say nice things about a company. You need to speak directly to the decision-makers and stakeholders who can testify as to the reliability and quality of commercial cleaning services’ capability.

When you interview a company, ask them what kinds of products they use and how careful they are about checking for things like mold and fungus.

Call the better business bureau and ask about former claims against a potential cleaning service for your building and offices and make sure there is nothing on their “record” that raises any serious red flags.

If you can, ask to visit some of the company’s other clients and take a look at their work. Even better: go when they are “on the job,” because there is no better way to see how a company does its work than when it’s actually in the process of doing it!
