Australia is filled with many beautiful attractions and tourist spots. In cities like Melbourne, you can enjoy both the day life and the night life, thanks to the many entertainment spots available. One way you can fully enjoy your stay in Australia, though, whether permanently or just for a number of years, is by having access to the Internet. There's no question that having an excellent Internet connection at home makes life easier and more convenient, and it's really crucial that you have one, especially when living in a huge city. There are a number of ISPs you can choose from in Australia, but before picking one, you need to take these things into consideration first:

1. Most Internet Connections in Australia are ADSL2+

If you're not familiar with the term, ADSL2+ is simply an extension to the ADSL technology, and provides faster Internet connection. To put it in perspective, it allows you to download up to 3 times faster than traditional ADSL. This means it is fairly reliable for all types of Internet use. ADSL2+ is usually advertised at 2 to 24Mbps, but the speed you will receive will actually depend on your distance from the exchange. If you are quite close, then you can expect to receive a stronger connection, maybe around 15Mbps.

2. Most ISPs Require a 1 or 2 Year Contract

Perhaps this is the standard for most Internet Service Providers, whether you are in the Australia, in the US, or any other country. By being in a contract, this means you are required to avail yourself of the ISPs services until the agreement ends. You also probably realize that getting out of the contract before it expires may cost you a lot of money. For this reason, think very carefully before you decide which ISP to sign up for. Most ISPS in Australia are good, but there are also some that are really bad in terms of services.

3. Nothing is Guaranteed

This applies regardless of which country you are in. ISPs may advertise that they are offering connection with this speed or that, but in an actual situation, the connection you will receive will depend on several factors. Location is one those factors. As mentioned earlier, the nearer you are to the exchange, the better. Equipment is another. If you feel you are not getting nearly as much as what you have paid for, you can start looking for a new ISP.

4. Compare ISPs Before Selecting

As mentioned, most ISPs require that you sign a 2-year contract with them. In most cases, even if you are not satisfied with their service, there's very little chance you can terminate the contract without having to pay a penalty fee. For this reason, take time to research to find out which ISP can meet your needs the best before signing up for one. In Australia, you can choose from a number of ISPs such Dodo, Iprimus, and Optus. Before you decide which ISP to go for, make sure you do some comparison shopping first. This will save you a great deal of time, money, and energy in the long run.
