Tips For Writing An Effective Tutorial

By Author: Eugene Lopez
Total Articles: 40

The opening of the tutorial is like any other article, it has to clearly state its purpose to the reader in order to grab their attention. Depending on the opening pitch of the tutorial, the reader will then decide to either keep reading or to go onto the next one.
The knowledge level of the information that is being presented has to be equal to what the reader feels they should attain from the readings. There cannot be any generalized statements or educated guesses as the reader wants specifics and data to support what is being stated. If a generalized statement or an educated guess is something that the reader was wanting to begin with, then they would have had ample time of doing this on their own.
Present the information in a clear and concise manner so that the reader has no problem understanding or misinterpreting the information. Taking this one step further, do not add more information then what is needed for the purpose of trying to dazzle the reader - sometimes less is better, but only if the information is complete.
The layout can be crucial, as the presentation of the information is just as important then the information itself. Use diagrams, pictures, or illustrations as needed. This helps to not only explain a problem through written dialogue, but a illustration next to written instructions gives the reader a focal point of what and where in a precise manner. This helps the reader reinforce and provides them a way to follow along if they are following the steps as outlined in the tutorial in a live manner.
Do you remember the book that Windows franchised for computer learners wanting to know about windows applications? This book started a trend in understanding that an audience of the information can be from any knowledge base. The author needs to understand this when writing an effective tutorial as the information that is presented has to be done in a manner that anyone can understand the information. If this means taking it back to the basics then do just that.
Be prepared to answer questions and provide the means for readers to ask them. Create a frequently asked questions resource for the most noticeable questions that have been brought up previously and provide a contact method for new questions that are brought forth. The idea of support is to assure that the reader feels as though you are their best resource for the following information, and that they will not have to seek the information elsewhere.
Last but not least; assure the tutorial that you have constructed is going to work for the task that it is intended to. After completion, follow the steps step by step to make sure that it is outlined appropriately, error free, and grammatically correct. If there are any errors or omissions, this would be the time to correct them.
Tutorials are something that contains a wealth of information as the information presented needs to be in a manner that is captivating, informative, and concise. This means of dissemination is meant to provide a specific type of information to a specific audience, and in understanding the particulars that are associated with this, the author can write a tutorial that meets the needs of the reader.
