Catchy and famous headlines have earned their creators millions over the years. I think most of us can remember advertising jingles which will probably stay with us for the rest of our lives. Rarely did these powerful words and phrases appear by accident. I was interested, but not surprised, to learn that the creators of some of these really hard-hitting and memorable phrases, went on to be successful professional novelists. Two which spring to mind are Salman Rushdie and Fay Weldon.
There is no question that great efforts and skills went into crafting their successful and well-tailored phrases. Whether this comes under the heading of art or science can be debated until the cows come home.
If you can answer an 'either/or question' with a yes, then this is probably as accurate as it needs to be.
There is an art to putting words together into elegant and attractive phrases. There are also scientific ways in which to test which combinations of words work best in attracting your readers. What is not in doubt is the value of the effort ...
... which produces compelling and high-impact headlines. They can be worth as much as the whole of the rest of the article.
The other side of the coin of course, is that the writing must deliver what the never-to-be-forgotten headline promises. Your readers will not thank you for being conned into following up, if their curiosity can not be satisfied.
So, whether it is art or science - or a combination of both - you need to be sure to use enough of it. This will make certain you create headlines which attract the right readers to your work. Learning about the words and phrases which sell; this is just one aspect of developing your skill as a writer. When you want others to read your efforts, you owe it to them to be as good as you can be. Look for the guidance, training and coaching you might need.
Gradually improving your best, in writing or any other field of endeavor, is one great way to keep your life on track to long-lasting happiness and contentment.
