A green thumb and a great deal of patience is needed to take on the hobby of organic gardening. It is an activity that has a goal of growing fresh, nutritious food that is free of pesticides. Easier said than done, right? Enjoy the following article that will help you become an expert organic gardener.

Your children will enjoy being involved with your organic gardening endeavors. A garden can provide a wonderful learning experience for children, and will give you an opportunity to bond with them while you produce healthy food.

To be most efficient in your gardening, always keep your tools close at hand. Use a bucket large enough to hold all your equipment or wear pants with multiple pockets. You should always have your gloves, pruning shears and a trowel close to you.

Spend your time working efficiently in your organic garden. Do not spend half an hour looking everywhere for a tool. In addition to keeping your gardening tools in one location, you should also clean your tools after each use. You can keep your garden tools in a tool belt, or in your pockets. Another good idea is to keep them all in a bucket ...
... that you carry around with you.

Pine can be a wonderful mulch. Certain plants are acidic, and thrive in acidic soil. When you have any plants like this, it's very simple to just collect pine needles to use in your bed. Lay a few inches of needles over the beds to allow them to decompose and add some acid to your soil.

Put used coffee grounds on the soil. Coffee grounds are full of nitrogenous nutrients that growing plants need. Nitrogen is a nutrient that will help your plants grow taller and bloom faster, so use those coffee grounds, extra compost, or diluted urea to make this happen.

Tend your organic garden on a regular schedule. No matter what your schedule is like, you should be able to fit in small things that will help you avoid having an overwhelming amount of work all at once. If you are outside with your dog, pluck a few weeds while your dog is taking care of his business.

You may find an old plastic laundry basket ideal for gathering vegetables from your garden. It makes a great strainer for your vegetables. If you hose off your produce in the laundry basket, the water will leave the basket through the holes in the sides.

The compost pile should include equal parts of dried material and green plant material. "Green" material refers to things like wilted flowers, weeds, leaves from your yard, and grass clippings. Examples of dried plant material are sawdust, shredded paper, straw, cut-up woody material, and cardboard. Your compost pile should never contain meat, ashes or charcoal.

If you'd like to create a raised bed, use materials like brick, stone, or untreated wood. Be sure that any wood you use isn't chemically treated, and will be able to resist rot naturally. Cypress, locust and cedar usually work best. Take care to avoid wood that has been chemically treated when your garden will hold vegetables, since unknown substances in the wood can make their way into your future food. If your existing garden structure contains treated wood, at least take the time to make a plastic lining beneath the soil.

Never buy poor produce again. Use the advice from this article to begin growing your own produce today.
