It is hard to say definitively which breed of dog is the most intelligent, but we can get an overall picture of which breeds generally seem to be intelligent and which ones tend to be a bit slower in the head. Dumb or smart, dogs make great companions, so don’t think too much of this!

Australian Cattle Dogs are one of the smartest dog breeds out there. They are bred for herding cattle which means they have to be pretty organized and intelligent in order to be successful at it. The downside is that they can bore easily and get into trouble when they are looking for excitement. One of the more obvious indicators of their high intellect is that some Australian Cattle Dogs will actually put away their toys when they are done using them. Golden Retrievers are another highly intelligent dog breed. Some have shown the ability to learn over 200 different commands, and they are also extremely affectionate and loyal companions. Another highly intelligent dog breed is the Poodle. Some would argue that it is the smartest breed of dogs, but it is hard to differentiate. Poodles have been known to organize their toys in a specific manner. Some owners would purposely scramble up their toys only to find them neatly organized the next day. Some Poodle owners have also reported that they have to deadbolt all of the doors in their house because their Poodles had figured out how to open doors! Some Poodles have also figured out how to open garbage cans by pushing on the foot levers. Poodles also make excellent show dogs as they can be taught just about any trick in the book, and they learn the tricks very fast as well.

Dog intelligence varies greatly. Some Poodles are geniuses whereas some others might not be the sharpest knives in the drawer. A lot of it depends on how they are raised and trained by their masters. If you take great care to train your dog and teach them tricks, then chances are they will be smarter than the dog that you neglect all day.
