Various Problems With The Granite Stone

Granite is known to be the most stable and durable stone. It has multiple applications and is widely used all around the globe. Granite is known for various properties beauty and durability and is preferred the most over the other stones. It is commonly used for making sculpture, grave markers, architectural trims, used in homes for making kitchen ledges, shower vanity tops, washroom sinks and basins and fireplace mantles.
Though having various uses, granite has certain problems that have to be taken care. Here are listed various problems with the granite stone:
Cracking
Cracks may appear on the surface of granite stone. There can be various reasons responsible for it which includes structural overloading as a result of settlement and defect in the material used. However, appearance of minor cracking may be an early sign of structural problems. Due to cracks, water may get inside leading to salt migration. In fact, the best way of repairing is to either patch the crack or replace it.
Erosion
This problem can occur with granite as well with other stones. It is the wearing away of the upper surface by the wind, water and windblown particles. This could not be corrected the only solution is further protecting the surface from the exposure. As this may, slow down the process the process of erosion.
Flaking
Flaking is the early stage for other serious problems which include peeling, exfoliation, and delamination and can be seen as a small piece gets detached from a larger piece of stone. This problem arises due to capillary moisture or freeze thaw cycles that occur within the building material. Using water repellent coating may also result in flaking as moisture get sealed between the surfaces. As a matter of fact, regular inspection is required.
Peeling
It is the flaking of the surface of the stone in strips or layers. This problem arises due to improper application of building material coating that result in the failure of the coating or stone surface. Peeling also arises due to the chemical reaction that takes place because of environmental elements.
Staining
The granite is prone to stains. There are a number of reasons responsible for staining. These are listed below: graffiti, salt crystallization, corroded steel or iron with the building, bird droppings and when granite is run off from bronze or any other metal sculpture. These stains can be removed, but the method of removing will be different and depend on the type of stains.
Efflorescence
It is the appearance of whitish deposit on the upper layer of the granite. The soluble salts get settled on the surface. These soluble salts arise due to various reasons like improper cleaning agents, mortar, de-icing salts, rising damps and air pollution. Efflorescence can be a salt residue that arises due to improper cleaning. It is a clear sign of water problems. However, it should be considered serious and thorough inspection is required as to find out the correct reason so that it can be rectified by taking corrective actions.
