A lot of the time the majority of your sales are made by a small proportion of your sales team. This means some members of your team are already motivated, and others need a boost. You can target your incentive programs and schemes towards those who are not achieving as highly as others. However, you need to be careful because if you only offer rewards to some and not others, it's going to look like favouritism and seem unfair, and this may result in the well-performing employees losing motivation.

Sales incentives need to be fair for the whole team, which means that ideally everybody should be eligible for a reward. These don't have to be expensive rewards, and sometimes all it takes is a thank you to make someone feel good about their work and achievements. A good example of a sales incentive is to present thank you notes or congratulatory letters to employees who meet criteria which you have set. This criteria needs to be clear so that employees know exactly what is expected of them.

However, sometimes employees need something more to give them that extra bit of job satisfaction. Some other ideas for sales ...
... incentives could include group trips which are organised by the company for all those who have met a target, or even cash prizes and bonuses.

Giving high performers recognition is important because it will not only help to motivate them to continue performing well, but will also motivate others, if not for the rewards and money, then for the status of being a high performer. By using a reward system, you're effectively creating a sense of competition in the workplace which, as long as it doesn't get out of hand, will help to create a motivational environment for everyone involved. Things will only get nasty if employees feel like the system is unfair, so it's vital that you make sure all employees have the same chances of achieving.

Something you need to be aware of when introducing an incentive scheme is that some things are better kept as a surprise. In other words, when something becomes part of routine, employees will start expecting it. If you buy everybody lunch every Friday as a reward for their good work, eventually people are going to start expecting it whether they have done well or not. If you buy everybody lunch occasionally when you think they have performed well, this will make them feel like they are getting recognition for their work, and not just getting bribed.

No matter what kind of incentive system you choose to put in place, it is highly important that you have one because all in all, your employees work hard to keep your business running. You need to make them feel like valued members of the company, because if they don't feel like you appreciate their work, they're not going to bother doing a good job of it.
