The previous round of price rises showed a 10.9 per cent gain across the the USA, as suggested by Case-Schiller figures.

Case-Schiller’s survey saw all 20 markets featured register price gains with several cities besting 20 % in terms of increases.

Atlanta – where many sizable hedge funds are buying up distressed homes - was among those at the very top of the chart with a 19.1 % rise, in the year to April.

Las Vegas posted a 20.6 % rise and Phoenix 22.5 %. Dallas, which is attracting buying from both funds and international buyers, increased by just 6.8 % on the Case-Schiller statistics. The two Florida markets that the investigation includes - Tampa and Miami - both registered increases of in excess of 10 %.

The Case-Schiller figures came as the total number of properties in some formof foreclosuredroppedto 1.1 million, down from 1.5 million a year ago.

Foreclosures, though, were still occurring at 52,000 per month – at least twice the pre-crisis average.
Plainly the housing sector is still travelling from depressed to vibrant again.

It appears going by these statistics that the bottom for the US real estate sector may have occurred some six to 12 months ago.
