Because people buy things, there's a lot of movement of goods worldwide. Some goods that are manufactured exclusively in one country and have a worldwide consumer base have to deal with a lot of logistical issues. This is what makes the business of moving freight an indispensable industry in a world where things are sent daily from one point on the globe to another at a frenetic pace.

Sending freight can cost an arm and a leg, especially if what's being sent is big in size or in number and if it's going to be sent to the other side of the planet. This is why it's important that if you're sending cargo, make sure you really get what you pay for and, more importantly, you don't pay for something you shouldn't.

Here are some tips on how you can get real value for the money you pay for the freight you send (or receive), especially if you ship large volumes of goods on a regular basis:

Pay only for what you ship - Always check that the details written on the waybill (a document that gives info on goods being shipped) are really the details of the items you're shipping. The details on the waybill have to agree ...
... with what you're shipping (e.g. height, width, weight, etc.). If certain dimensions are above the actual dimensions of the stuff you're sending, it would mean additional expense on your part.

Don't pay for unnecessary air freight - And we're talking here about air freight on the volumetric weight. All freight movements are subject to what's called as weight-to-volume calculations. This is done in order to get the volumetric weight versus the actual weight of the cargo for shipment. To make sure that a minimum yield is obtained for the freight's movement, freight is charged on the larger of the two weights. Make sure you don't pay more than necessary due to the low density of your cargo.

Choose the most cost-effective transit time and routes - Sometimes, a faster transit time or direct route can cost you more. If you're not rushing your shipment, you can actually pay less if you choose an indirect route or slower transit time. For example, air freight from Australia to New York direct would be more costly if the cargo is shipped to 'The Big Apple' via Singapore or Japan on a certain airline. Be sure to check routes and transit times to be more cost-efficient with your shipment.

Be on the lookout for hidden costs - Just like when you pay charges you had not been aware of on your phone bill, there can also be hidden charges if you're the receiver of the cargo. There are overseas suppliers that offer cheap sea freight rates. However, what they may not tell you is the reason they charge cheap is because they charge a commission to an agent, who in turn hides this commission in the destination charges.

These are just some of the tips you can follow to make sure you're not overcharged for the cargo you send or receive. Always be aware of what the rates really are and how much you should really be paying for.
