To your regret, the US Patent and Trademark Office refused the trademark and sent a letter to Apple in January. The USPTO reviewer argued that the name was “merely descriptive”.In the letter, it said the "applied-for mark merely describes a feature or characteristic of applicant's goods". The terms "mini" and "pad" and the prefix "i-" were all descriptive, it decided.

According to Techcrunch, there is another reason about denying the application. Apple didn’t provide the USPTO with a specimen other than its own product website, even though Apple always uses these for its trademark applications.

The letter made public in the last few days but it was mailed to Apple on January 24. The letter wrote: "Registration is refused because the applied-for mark merely describes a feature or characteristic of applicant's goods."
