Gaming is one of the most popular sections of the mobile application industry. Gaming apps are the most downloaded and used among mobile users of every age group and spanning different sections of the society. Hence, it is but natural that the major operating systems and technology units worldwide want to design and install gaming mobile apps with an aim to enhance the target audience base. If reports are to be believed, Apple’s iOS and the technology giant’s devices have been successful to generate the maximum number of gaming apps, thereby acquiring the largest part of the video game share market.

More than 30,000 gaming apps have been uploaded to the Apple App Store since its inception in the year 2007. Most game titles available at this store will also feature on the Top Grossing and Top Paid lists of video games released at the end of a fiscal year. It will not be an exaggeration to say that games are the best selling category of mobile applications at the App Store and thus it’s most profitable segment. It is to be mentioned here that gaming had been a popular activity even during the times of use of the desktop and laptop. However, the practice of PC gaming has declined to a great extent over the last couple of years because of the introduction of devices such as smartphones and tablets that run state of the art gaming apps. Only 5 percent of the world’s gaming audience still prefers operating games on their PCs, mainly because of the larger display they provide. Today, a large portion of revenue generated by the video gaming segment of Apple is obtained from the mobile industry and this income comes from not only increased download rates but also the subscription fees and virtual goods payments that gaming app designers of Apple apps receive from social networking sites and multiplayer online gaming sites. It is also to be mentioned here that the gaming market audience mostly use handheld devices and consoles for operating their mobile game apps.

The growth of the iOS gaming application segment has shown a steady growth ever since the inception of the platform in 2007. While gaming apps running on the iPhone and the iPod Touch was estimated at enjoying only 1 percent of the market share in 2008, the figures went up to 5 percent in the span of just one year. Today, mobile gaming applications running on Apple devices account for more than 30 percent share in the market. Controlling the largest percentage of shares in the mobile gaming market which constitutes more than $10 billion has enabled the iPod Touch and the iPhone to defeat console games on PCs from the perspective of the current market share. It is also to be remembered that there was a downturn in the economy during the period 2010 to 2012 that resulted in an increasing number of console gaming users turn to iOS gaming apps as the latter were available at cheaper rates.

Not for anything do mobile market researchers say that iOS gaming apps were perhaps the most dangerous thing to have hit the mobile market.
