There are many different facets to the new amendments of the Latvia Immigration Visa Law. The new additions and changes have made it easier to get the temporary resident permit. The foreign nationals will have to fulfil one of the following categories to be able to give in an application for the temporary resident permit or visa. The foreign national will have to have a significant investment in the equity capital of a Latvia based company or should have considerable real estate holdings in Latvia. The minimum amount to be invested in real estate and investment has been pre decided. The real estate holding, based on the area or location, can be of varied value.
The foreign national can also be a family member of a person who has a temporary resident permit visa. The temporary resident visa can be given to workers who have been offered employment by a Latvia based company. The company will have to initiate the procedure for obtaining a temporary resident visa.

The documents should include the passport of the foreign national, a valid and recent health certificate, the contract of work issued by the employer firm, a recent photograph of the foreign national, documents to show proper cause or need for the temporary resident permit and the documents to prove the existence of real estate holdings or investment in Latvia. The real estate holdings and investment can be in the name of the foreign national or spouse. Spouses will have to show documents to show the relation to the foreign national. Children can also be granted a temporary resident visa in the same manner. The children will have the right to study in Latvia. They can complete schooling and continue with higher studies if the prove their merit.
The Latvia Immigration Visa Law states clearly that the foreign national will have to renew the temporary resident visa every year. This will have to be done personally so it makes it necessary for the foreign national to be present in Latvia at the time of renewal.
Once the foreign national is able to get a temporary resident permit he can convert it into a permanent residence. There are certain regulations concerning this conversion too. The foreign national should be able to prove that he is interested in making Latvia his permanent residence and he will have to give up the citizenship of the country that he is presently a citizen of. He is not allowed to hold two citizenships. The time period for the conversion of the temporary resident permit into a permanent residence can vary between 3 years to five years. If the contribution, of the foreign national to the Latvian community, is significant then the government will consider the application within a shorter period of time.
