Challenge Adding Wi-fi To Trans-continental Flights

Experienced fliers are no longer simply satisfied by being able to find cheap airplane tickets and cheap travel packages. They want flights which offer the latest in flight entertainment options, especially Wi-Fi connectivity.

Intercontinental flights have experienced difficulties finding a reliable, cost effective way of providing passengers with Wi-Fi service while over water. Today, in flight Internet relies on transmitting signals from the ground. Intercontinental flights have held back offering Wi-Fi because of the cost and the additional weight of equipment necessary for satellite transmission.

The good news is that trans-continental Internet service will finally be offered by several airlines later this year. Qantas will shortly start testing satellite based Internet service on flights between Australia to Los Angeles. Japan’s JAL Airline plans on introducing Internet service on planes flying from Japan to Europe and North America this summer.
