“mystery Trips” Growing In Popularity

Some travelers are looking for more than simply cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms. New research reveals that consumers are increasingly willing to book trips without knowing where they are going.

Such trips are being called “Mystery Trips.” Travelers agree to a price and book without knowing their final destination. Mystery trips were named as a major trend for North American in the Global Trends Report 2011.

Travelers typically pay around 50 percent of the normal price of trip. Mystery Trips show greatest appeals among travelers aged 20-34.

Other key travel trends identified in the report include:

“Luxury without guilt,” a new movement in Europe which encourages the rise of eco friendly, luxury destinations that allow high end travelers to get away while still feeling good.

In Europe travelers are increasingly being offered trips that place greater emphasis on helping local areas, offering encounters with local craftsmen, musicians and communities.

In the Middle East the key travel trend is the rebranding of Arab Spring countries, with Tunisia and Egypt using ...
... their political upheavals earlier this year to reinvent themselves as popular destinations.

In Africa the key trend is mobile commerce, with more and more travelers expected to reserve travel using their mobile phones.

The key Asian trend is the rise of China with hoteliers increasingly doing whatever it takes to attract Chinese travelers and brands such as Hilton and InterContinental introducing Chinese specific welcome packages.
