Great proposal writers have a number of attributes. Creativity, discipline, focus and commitment are just a few of the words which can describe writing and bid management attributes needed. Mixed in with a heady dose of self-discipline, organisation and best practice.

If all this seems a little too good to be true, it’s worth thinking about the last time you sat down in your role as proposal writer, and produced some great compliant copy. The likelihood is, you managed to somehow shut out the rest of the world and focus intently upon what you were writing. You produced the copy in a kind of haze of intent, without allowing the rest of the world to intrude upon what you were doing.

It’s a sad fact of bid management that our environment is very rarely conducive to producing great copy. Most office spaces are busy, loud and vibrant, with a team of people all checking in with each other regularly, and constant interruptions from meetings, the telephone and colleagues popping in to chase up material or clarify elements of the bid management ...
... /b> process. With all this activity, finding a way to produce engaging and compliant copy is almost impossible. Even the most focused proposal writer can’t be expected to operate at optimum when their environment is full of distractions and interruptions.

Luckily, proposal writing is a transportable discipline. As long as the tender writer has access to a half-decent laptop and a memory stick, they can go virtually anywhere with their latest bid, and develop their responses in line with the customer’s requirements. Getting the freedom to write without distractions is one of the most important things which any proposal writer can do within their team, and it’s important that the other people in your company appreciate just how much can be achieved away from a busy office environment, when the bid writer is given the space to write.

The main problem with generating some space is that the average corporate company usually has a firm policy of people being in the office within the standard hours. The writing process thrives on silence and space, however, which means that the majority of bid writers are forced to take their work home, or to a secluded area, out of the normal office day. As bid writers, one of the most important things which we can do to enhance the quality of our work is to ensure that we have the support of our manager and peers, when it comes to gaining space to write.

The best way to demonstrate the value of having space as a proposal writer is to provide direct evidence correlating to the value that it can bring. Enhanced productivity will soon follow a period away from the office, and this alone should be enough to persuade the reluctant bid manager or fellow team members that the bid writing is best done away from a busy, interruption-filled space. With time, all bid writers should be in an ideal position to demonstrate the value of having their own space, free of the phone calls and meetings which punctuate the average working day for a busy bid team.
