Linen fabric is made from the fibres of the flax plant which has got a scientific name that is Linum usitatissimum. Linen is generally treasured for its extraordinary freshness and coolness in hot and humid weather. The word “linen” is associated with the Latin word for the flax plant which is linum. In the past people used linen even to make lightweight outfits like undergarments for example - waistshirts, chemises, lingerie, cuffs and separable shirt collars.

Linen was very popular in Egypt and was used for many purposes. Mummies have been found wrapped in linen shrouds dating back as far as 4500BC. The mummies were draped in linen as the fabric was seen as a representation of light, transparency and wealth. The ancient Egyptians regarded Linen as the gift of god and considered it as divine. It symbolised cleanliness and purity and was favoured by Pharaohs and other nobility.

Some of the products that are made from linen are: apron, towels, bags, bed sheets, napkins, linen tablecloth, chain cover, wallet, runners as well as men’s and women’s wear.

Linen is considered to be an excellent ...
... fabric as it protects the skin against UV rays and sun allergies. Some of the benefits of linen are:

• Adds charm and trendiness to any attire
• It is anti-bacterial
• It has thermo regulating properties. It can be worn in any kind of weather such as hot, humid and even climate
• The clothing has got high strength. On wetting it becomes 20% stronger.
• It can be tailored without any trouble
• It is non-static, non-allergenic and lint free
• It is completely a natural product
• It is resistant to fungus and bacteria
• This clothing can be printed, finished and designed easily

But there are a few things to be taken care of while washing the fabric-

• You need to be careful about the chemicals used.
• For white linen use oxygen-type bleaches
• Launder stains on linen clothes when fresh

It is seen that long skirts, coats and dresses with delicate embroidery and thread work looks best on linen. But, if you opt for heavy embroidery work and beadwork then the natural charm of linen might be lost. Beige, white and light brown are the three colours that look quite great on linen. There are also designers who have tried hard to add darker shades to the existing range of colours.
