Web Content Management System is software that provides authoring, collaboration, and administration tools for a website to permit users with minimal knowledge of website programming language in managing and creating website content easily. A strong web content management system gives a good foundation for collaboration for users and other authors.

It can be used by users with minimal technical knowledge to make changes on the website. Web Content Management system normally requires a system administrator and a web developer. They add features and set up them to the website. A website maintenance tool can be used by non-technical people.

There are three types of web content management system. These are offline processing, online processing, and hybrid systems. These describe the process when presentation templates are applied.

The advantages of a web content management system are low cost, easy customization, easy to use, and work flow management. Drupal, TYPO3, Joomla and WordPress are free WCMS. Some are based on subscription which is still cheaper than hiring a developer. Most CMS use AJAX system, a drag and drop tool, for their designs. It makes it easy to customize. It is easy to use because it is designed for non-technical people. Simplicity is the main focus of the system. It also controls how, when, who published the content.

The disadvantages of a web content management system are larger implementation size required for training, planning, and certifications, and also it needs maintenance. It may sometimes need to update license, upgrades, and hardware maintenance. It also large files stored in HTML-based systems which may leads to errors. If the hardware is also out of date or databases unutilized correctly web content management system may also experience latency.
