Nowadays, we have a variety of beds that are used for a number of purposes beyond their main identity as a piece of household furniture. This can range from the every day bed to those such as sofa beds, air beds, camp beds and even vibrating beds. Many beds are also used for medical purposes.

Beds come in a range of sizes; single – the smallest, double, king, queen, super king and California king, which is the largest. However, the names corresponding to specific dimensions may vary between countries.

The most common type of bed used across most western countries is the double bed which dimensions typically consist of 54in × 75in. They are a popular choice as they enable two people to share a bed in a comfortable space without taking up too much room to allow for other furniture. Many people also choose them as an alternative to a single bed as they are not too large for an individual to sleep in alone.

Not only do allow for one or two people to sleep in, they can also be used as a decorative feature to the room. By adding decorative bedding, pillows and throws it allows a person to create a more exciting element to the room. A bedroom should be a place to enjoy and relax in, and with an increased focus on interior décor over the years, we are now able to create an atmosphere that suits every individual.

Beds can also double up as a storage device. Many beds now come with drawers built underneath them to allow for extra storage of items such as clothing or shoes. Those beds without drawers also have space to put your own storage boxes underneath which creates a convenient way to use space that was once filled by a bulky bed.

The two main components of a bed are the mattress and the frame, both of which have developed greatly over the years. The frame is usually made from either wood or metal as it is relatively cheap to produce and provides a sturdy base. Mattresses are usually formed from a number of springs sewn into small fabric bags. In recent years, there has been a development in the material used and a now popular choice is the memory foam mattress, which was designed to provide maximum support, especially for the spine.

Due to an increase in the importance of the appearance of the bed, they are now available in a number of designs, and even shape to suit the customer. This includes faux leather double bed; velvet frames, four-poster beds and often the frames are carved into ornate designs. This allows each bed to suit both the individual and the room to create an environment that has both personality and comfort.
