A sweatshirt with a hood, the hoodie jacket, also called a zip-up, whatever the name is, it is the in thing in fashion today. A typical characteristic design includes large frontal pockets, a hood, and a drawstring to adjust the hood opening. Sometimes worn with sweatpants, some hoodies have zippers on them to allow easy removal much like a jacket.

The hoodie became famous in the 1970s with the advent of the hip hop culture in New York City. The hoodie provided an instant anonymity that appealed to people with criminal intent and also inspired high fashion during this era. In the 70s, this fashion attire has been embraced by Norma Kamali and other high-profile designers who glamorized this new clothing that even lead to its appearance in Silvester Stallon’s blockbuster film Rocky. Many colleges and universities in America and Canada create their own hoodies with their school name across the chest or back. Hoodies are a common dress for outside exercises such as jogging and running.
Hoodies also have been the subject of much criticism and are often perceived to be worn by people with criminal intent as people may use the hood to conceal their identities from CCTV cameras. A hoodie worn with a baseball cap, has become a trademark of "chavs", or Neds.

 A shopping centre in Kent, UK, called the Bluewater  launched a code of conduct for the shoppers which banned then from wearing hoodies and baseball caps and this has even resulted in an outrage amongst youth. The then Prime Minister of UK, Tony Blair has supported this by stating that he would clamp down the anti-social behavior with which hoodie wearers are sometimes associated. This resulted in save the Hoodie" campaign and even Lady Sovereignm a London based rapper came out with single titled "Hoodie" in support of this campaign.
