Despite the fact that opposition has been coming only from "some" residents of West Roseville, I find it generally unwise, unreasonable to merge the townships of Roseville and West Roseville.
To begin with, since there has been talk of the merger, it is certain that Roseville and West Roseville are neighboring towns.
Many a town has got their neighboring town or towns. Residents in one town do not, usually, get "confused" about which authority to contact when they need a service. Most of them even do not know the telephone numbers and addresses of the authorities of the other town. They don't have to wait for long; several months, or one year, at most, will be enough for everything to become normal. Then the Roseville and West Roseville residents will come to re-member the new numbers and addresses, and contact the right authorities. The confusion will wear off before long, to be sure.
Further, although "the savings in administrative costs would be enormous," it is silly to believe that the merger would cause no job losses. When the two townships merge, one of the two mayors would lose his job, one of the two fire chiefs would lose his job, and half of the department heads would lose their jobs. So would their secretaries and assistants and IWC Replica Watches deputies. Any merger would cause some people to lose their jobs, in fact, and the Roseville merger would be no exception.
Most importantly, there is neither reason nor sign that the merger will attract "business investments" as it did when the townships of Hamden and North Hamden merged ten years ago. On the contrary, it might be in order to attract these that the town of Roseville was cut into two towns, most likely in compliance with the wishes of the people in the West part of the old Roseville town.
That may be why opposition to the merger has been coming only from residents of the new town West Roseville. They know reasons why the one town was cut up into two, and they know what benefit (a larger prosperity for them, I guess) has come about as a result. Let the editor of the Roseville Gazette listen carefully to these people before they can confidently tell what can be done.
